Top performing charter public school recognized for robust AP program that enables students to accelerate their higher education pathways



LOS ANGELES, CA – Bright Star Schools’ Rise Kohyang High School, a high-performing charter public school in Los Angeles, has been awarded gold and silver distinction on the College Board’s 2023 AP (Advanced Placement) School Honor Roll.

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.

Rise Kohyang High School (RKHS) serves over 470 students in the Koreatown community of Los Angeles, and 92% of the school’s students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

With robust academics, AP courses, and strong social-emotional support, RKHS had a 98% high school graduation rate in 2023, and all (100%) RKHS graduates are eligible for admissions to Cal State and UC schools – compared to just 51% of students statewide.

“We’re thrilled that our robust, higher-education focus and student success are being recognized by the AP School Honor Roll. At Rise Kohyang High School, we offer numerous AP classes to students beginning in 9th grade, provide individualized counseling support, lead college trips across the country, and provide up to six years of free higher education support for our graduates,” said Cynthia Trigueros, principal of Rise Kohyang High School.

RKHS has a strong higher education-focused culture, with 10 AP teachers, 13 AP Courses, and 16 AP Sections, with AP courses available to students beginning in 9th grade. RKHS also offers opportunities for students to self-study for additional AP exams.

Results from the Honor Roll include:

  • College Credit. Rise Kohyang High School received gold recognition for college credit, with 35% of seniors scoring a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam.
  • College Culture. 56% of RKHS seniors took at least one AP exam during high school, earning the school silver recognition.
  • College Optimization.9% of the RKHS seniors took 5 or more AP exams, earning the school silver recognition.

RKHS’ high school graduation rate is 98%, compared to a statewide average of 87% (21-22, source), and 100% of RKHS graduates are eligible for admissions to a Cal State or University of California school, compared to just 51% of students statewide (21-22, source).

After high school graduation, all RKHS alumni receive up to 6 years of free, individualized higher education support from Bright Star Schools’ Alumni Support and College Success program to ensure they thrive and graduate.
