Mission Bright Star Schools is a growing charter management organization (CMO) based in West Adams and South Los Angeles. Bright Star operates two tuition-free public charter schools – Stella Middle Charter Academy and Bright Star Secondary Charter Academy. The mission of Bright Star Schools is to open minds and doors by providing a rigorous college-preparatory education, offering individual attention, and teaching skills necessary for students to make good life choices. Through Bright Star’s culture of personal responsibility, respect, and accountability, students learn to be conscientious, compassionate, and creative members of our diverse communities. Inception Bright Star Schools was created in 2002 by a group of concerned educators and local citizens who recognized the need to provide the West Adams community with a successful alternative to underperforming local public schools. With the support of community leaders, dedicated parents, and a committed Board of Directors, we gained a LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) charter and in 2003, Stella Middle Charter Academy began operation. Our high school, Bright Star Secondary Charter Academy opened its doors in 2006. Our grade levels have expanded each year to reach more students and in 2010-11, our academies will serve over 700 students in the 5th - 12th grades on two campuses. Vision The vision of Bright Star Schools is to build exemplary tuition-free public schools that serve Los Angeles’s urban communities. By leveraging our core values and operating principles to achieve outstanding academic performance, Bright Star will establish a model of scholastic excellence for charter schools everywhere. By 2012, Stella Middle Charter Academy and Bright Star Secondary Charter Academy will reach full enrollment of 1,000 students, and our state-of-the art facility will open by 2014. |
