Life is more than just an experience of material things... All of Bright Star’s co-curricular programs enrich and enhance students’ classroom experiences while encouraging personal creativity and understanding, as well as the confidence to actively participate in society. Through these experiences, our students learn to strive for happiness and meaning in a diverse and broad world view. Life Experience Lessons We believe that inner-city students must be given the opportunity to enhance their education with real-life experiences if they are going to succeed long-term. Our distinctive LEL (Life Experience Lesson) program provides both area "Day Trips" and seasonal overnight trips around the country. Day Trips Students, teachers, and volunteers commit to significant out-of-class learning time around Los Angeles' diverse communities.
Overnight Trips Students achieving academic and citizenship milestones have the opportunity to attend the following week-long trips:
Arts Activities An arts education is directly tied to improved math and writing skills. Therefore, we continue to dedicate some regular day instruction and after-school programming to music class, intrumental lessons, music and art appreciation, studio arts, and dancing. Sports Activities We believe physical education is good for the mind and body. Our students must all accomplish grade-level milestones to ensure our students remain physically fit and active. Opportunities include basketball, soccer, boxing, and running. Our running program is a particular hallmark for our schools as close to twenty students and teachers complete the Los Angeles Marathon together each year. Family Dinners Parents lead the work in bringing together students, families, teachers, and administrators for monthly school fundraising dinners. Parents volunteer their time and their cooking skills as they share in fellowship with students, teachers, and administrators outside the daily grind of the classroom. |
